Unlike in pig-breeding and poultry-breeding where production is gathering momentum, the quantities of cattle intended for slaughter continue to decrease – in 9 months this year this figure has decreased by 6.8% making up 1565 thousand tons. The Russian Meat section provides analysis of the situation in this market.
First deliveries of Australian bloodstock to Russia began in August. Export to Russia is likely to continue, since the status of Australia as a country free from the mad cow disease constitutes a significant competitive advantage. Australian meat export to Russia is also likely to increase, because of insufficient quantities of beef supplied by the European Union. The Australian cattle herd expanded by 2.9% to 28.6 million in 2005-2006. Assuming a progressive reduction in global beef prices over the next five years, the incentive for further herd expansion is likely to dissipate, with herd growth projected to peak at around 30 million by the end of the decade – 2.7 million head or 10% higher than in 2005. The strong demand for finished cattle and the high prices on offer have encouraged producers to market steers and heifers earlier since 2004. The situation in the Australian meat market is examined in the World Meat section.
